What Is a Short-Term Loan?

A short-term loan is a personal loan you pay back over months, not years. It's built for a one-off cost you can clear quickly, like a car repair, a vet bill or an urgent bill that can't wait for payday.

At Jingle, short-term loans come in two sizes:

  • Small loans, $500 to $2,000, repaid over 3 to 12 months. These are small amount credit contracts (SACCs), and the law caps exactly what lenders can charge.
  • Medium loans, $2,001 to $5,000, repaid over a longer term for bigger one-off costs.

Both are unsecured, so you don't need to put up your car or anything else as security. Both have fixed repayments that line up with your pay cycle, whether that's weekly, fortnightly or monthly.

How Much Does a Short-Term Loan Cost?

No surprises, just the numbers. Here's exactly how Jingle prices short-term loans:

Small loans ($500 to $2,000)

  • Establishment fee: 20% of the amount borrowed
  • Monthly fee: 4% of the amount borrowed, with no interest
  • Early repayment fee: none

Medium loans ($2,001 to $5,000)

  • Establishment fee: $400
  • Interest: 47.6% p.a. (comparison rate 69.04% p.a.)
  • Early repayment fee: none

Representative example (small loan): Borrow $1,000 over 6 months with weekly repayments. You'll pay a $200 establishment fee and $240 in monthly fees, so $1,440 in total, or 25 weekly repayments of $57.60.

Comparison rates are true only for the examples given and may not include all fees and charges. See our borrowing and loan costs page for full representative examples.

Jingle tip: with a small loan, every extra month adds another 4%. Choose the shortest term you can comfortably afford and you'll keep the total down.

Is a Short-Term Loan Right for You?

We'd rather be straight with you than sell you something that doesn't fit.

A short-term loan can make sense if:

  • You've got a genuine one-off cost, like a car repair, a medical or dental bill, or a bond
  • You can comfortably repay it within the term without going short on rent, bills or groceries
  • You've checked cheaper options first

It's probably not the right fit if:

  • You need money for ongoing living costs or to pay off other loans
  • Your income is mostly from Centrelink
  • You're already behind on other repayments

Before you borrow, check free and lower-cost options. Many utility and phone providers offer payment plans. The No Interest Loan Scheme (13 64 57) offers no-interest loans for essentials if you're eligible. And the National Debt Helpline (1800 007 007) offers free, independent financial counselling.
