Help With Your Bond in WA

In Western Australia, a bond can be up to four weeks' rent, so a $650-a-week Perth rental can need a $2,600 bond. The WA Government's Bond Assistance Loan helps eligible renters with an interest-free loan for the bond and two weeks' rent. But its maximum loan for a single person in Perth is $1,600, so in today's rental market it may not cover the full amount.

The WA Bond Assistance Loan

The Bond Assistance Loan is an interest-free loan for your bond and two weeks' rent in advance. It's run by the Department of Housing and Works.

Who can apply:

  • You're 16 or older
  • Your assets are under $5,000 (single) or $10,000 (couple, or single with dependants)
  • The rent is no more than 60% of your gross income
  • You have a repayment arrangement for any existing housing debt
  • Your income is under the limit for your household

Income limits and maximum loans for Perth and country areas:

  • One person: income up to $988 a week (gross), maximum loan $1,600
  • Two adults: income up to $1,413 a week, maximum loan $1,700
  • Three or four people: income up to $1,693 a week, maximum loan $1,760 to $1,800
  • Five people: income up to $1,925 a week, maximum loan $2,000

Higher limits apply for people with a disability and in the North West and remote areas. Source: WA Government: Bond assistance loans.

How it works:

  1. Complete a Housing Options Assessment online, by phone or at a Housing office.
  2. If you're likely to be eligible, lodge a bond application.
  3. Your landlord signs the conditional approval form, and the department pays them.
  4. Repay at least $25 a fortnight, by Centrelink deduction, direct debit, BPAY or card.

Already paid the bond yourself? You can apply for a refund of it within eight weeks of paying.

If the loan doesn't cover the full bond

With Perth rents where they are, many renters find the gap between the maximum loan and the bond is several hundred dollars. Options to cover it:

  • No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS): up to $3,000 for a bond or rent in advance, with no interest or fees, if you're eligible. Call 13 64 57.
  • Ask for a payment plan for the rent in advance with your agent.
  • A personal loan for the gap: if the repayments fit your budget.
