Help With Your Bond in Queensland
In Queensland, a bond can be up to four weeks' rent. Since 30 September 2024 that cap applies whatever the rent, so a $600-a-week Brisbane rental means a bond of up to $2,400. The Queensland Government offers four kinds of help with bonds and rent, all interest-free and fee-free for eligible renters. If you don't qualify, a personal loan is another option.
How rental bonds work in Queensland
- Maximum bond: 4 weeks' rent, for any rent amount (since 30 September 2024)
- Who holds it: The Residential Tenancies Authority (RTA)
- Lodgement: Your landlord or agent must lodge it with the RTA within 10 days
- Getting it back: Lodge a refund request with the RTA when you move out. Disputes can go to RTA dispute resolution, then QCAT

Queensland Government bond loans and grants
The Department of Housing and Public Works offers four types of help. The RTA holds the bond, and when it's refunded, the RTA pays back any amount still owing on the loan first.
- Bond loan: up to 4 weeks' rent for your bond. Repaid, interest-free and fee-free.
- Bridging bond loan: a new bond while your old bond is still held by the RTA. Repaid, interest-free and fee-free.
- Bond loan plus: your bond plus 2 weeks' rent, up to 6 weeks' rent in total. Repaid, interest-free and fee-free.
- Rental grant: 2 weeks' rent for people in a housing crisis. You don't repay it.

How to apply: check your eligibility online with the Department of Housing and Public Works, then apply once you've been approved for a rental. Income and asset limits apply.
The bridging bond loan is worth knowing about if you're moving within Queensland. It covers the gap between paying your new bond and getting your old one back, which is when most renters get caught short.
If you don't qualify for a government bond loan
- No Interest Loan Scheme (NILS): up to $3,000 for a bond or rent in advance, with no interest or fees, if you're eligible. Call 13 64 57.
- Start your old bond refund early: you can lodge the refund request with the RTA as soon as you've moved out.
- Commonwealth Rent Assistance: if you receive Centrelink payments, check whether you're getting it.
- A personal loan: if the repayments fit your budget.
